Following our Tweet at around 2:20 this afternoon – “Unconfirmed rumour: Armed police outside a bungalow in Arctic Road, Cowes. We’re checking with the Police” – (thanks to Alex Norville for the story tip!), here’s more details.
We’ve just had it confirmed that armed police attended a house in Arctic Road earlier, after a member of the public reported a suspicious object to the police at 11:30 this morning.
Police are still on the scene.
We’re told by our man on the scene – John Cattle of Wighttrash – told us that there’s a police car is blocking the road and tape is across the road near the junction of Smithards Lane.
He said that there are 5-6 police still outside.
We’ve spoken to the police and they tell us that they were called at 11:30am this morning by a member of the public.
Evacuated
A number of residents have been evacuated to a near-by hall.
One man has been arrested and is in custody.
A suspicious object was taken away.
VB has heard rumours that it was a grenade – police will not confirm.
