Lanesend, Newchurch and Barton primary schools have all been handed ‘Artsmark Gold’ awards, which is a scheme run by the Arts Council.

Celebrating arts
Artsmark is described as a ‘national programme that enables schools to evaluate, celebrate and strengthen a quality arts offer. The programme aims to support and recognise formal education institutions that deliver rich and high quality arts provision.’

Councillor Dawn Cousins, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for children services said “When some people think of the arts, they may think of famous paintings or pieces of artwork, but the arts is much wider than that.

“It can be anything from theatre, music, literacy and of course visual. It is very important our schools teach our children about the arts and I congratulate Lanesend, Barton and Newchurch primaries on achieving this national recognition.”

The three schools join 253 others in the south east to have achieved an Artsmark in the latest round of awards.
