Bank Holiday waste collection: What you need to know

Over the bank holiday there will be:

  • no changes to your waste collection service for Monday 28th August;
  • no change to all waste and recycling collections due the week commencing 28th August;
  • no change to recycling centres opening hours over Monday 28th August – please book your trip as usual in advance here. You can check opening times on the IWC website;
  • No changes to bulky waste and reuse collections.

The Isle of Wight council (IWC) do ask that residents place their waste or recycling out early as normal by 7am on Monday 28th August.

Try to have a safe and sustainable bank holiday – here are IWC’s top tips for a green bank holiday celebration:

  • Fireworks: Be safe and don’t use them. The risk of fire caused by fireworks is high when conditions are dry, not to mention the distress caused by the noise to pets and wildlife. If you do still choose to use fireworks, place only used fireworks in your general waste after soaking them in water overnight. This prevents reignition at Forest Park treatment centre and helps keep staff safe.
  • Disposable barbeques/ash: Disposable barbeques can reach 400C and take around four hours to cool down. This makes them impossible to move, and poses danger to people and the environment. Leave ash to cool for 48 hours before disposing of in your household waste. Choose a reusable barbeque or have a picnic instead.
  • Disposable plates/cups and cutlery: Help reduce the usage of single use plastic by using your household plates instead.
  • Bottles and cans: Wash and squash any plastic or cans and put them in your recycling bin. Squashing plastic bottles and cans helps free up space. This makes it easier to collect and recycle more.
  • Left-over food waste: Use your food caddie to dispose of any leftover burgers, sausages, and food waste from your celebrations. Visit Love Food Hate Waste’s website for simple recipes to try.
