Bestival 09: Massive Attack Background in Video

Bestival 09: Massive Attack Background in VideoFollowing the news that legendary pioneers of the ‘Bristol’ sound Massive Attack will be headlining at Bestival 2009, we thought we’d give any of you who’ve somehow missed out, a little intro to the band, known to many to represent the very best in Trip Hop.

Reluctantly labelled or not, they’ve continued to change and adapt their sound over the years, gradually evolving from club DJs and sound system, to an increasingly complex sound with vocals, electronica and the growing inclusion of live musicians and guest vocalists to ensure their live performances continue to enthrall.

Born out of popular 80s sound system The Wild Bunch, the Massive Attack trio got together and released their first album ‘Blue Lines’ in 1991. Perhaps their most well known single was the brilliant Unfinished Sympathy.

The band briefly changed their name to ‘Massive’ during the Gulf War and released a second album, with the title track Protection featuring the vocals of Tracey Thorn.

1998’s Mezzanine brought a tense, darker sound, combining guitars, drum machines and live percussion, and an eclectic mix of guest vocalists.

An earlier release of Risingson had given a taste of the downbeat grooves that were to come, matched by the title track Mezzanine.

The last studio album from the band was ‘100th Window’ in 2003, and featured Sinead O’Connor on the single Special Cases.

Though not known for their adherence to deadlines, or titles, with the much anticipated arrival of their fifth album (currently only known as ‘LP5’) due in May, Bestival may well be the first outing of the new material, and you’ll be hearing it at its very best – live!
