Beware Of “Illegal Internet Use” Scam

VB have been alerted to a new scam targeting residents on the Isle of Wight.

Beware Of A company calling itself HSE Business Support has been writing to Island residents claiming that copyrighted files (music and videos) have been illegally uploaded to file sharing networks from their Internet connection.

Police investigating
Both the Police and IW Trading Standards are investigating.

£35 demanded
The company is demanding payment of £35 to avoid the addressee’s details being sent to the BPI (one of the the music industries trade bodies).

It appears that these letters are being sent out randomly and some of those who have received them don’t even have Internet access.

The letter asks for the payment to be made within seven days and provides a paying-in slip, as well as online banking details.

The addressee of the letter is informed that unless they pay the amount, their personal details will be forwarded to the BPI for prosecution.

“Never heard of them”
We contacted the business services company at the 48 High Street, Newport address given on the letter. They said they’d never heard of the company.

If you receive a letter like this from HSE Business Support please leave us a comment below, inform Trading Standards asap and do not pay the £35.
