We have just had someone on our doorstep claiming that they are able to give us a better deal on our energy bills and needed to come in to look at our previous bill with Southern Gas and Electricity and speak about our billing arrangement.
In fact he claimed specifically that he represented Southern Gas’ parent company and that they could give a better deal by dealing with us directly.

He was cleverly pressuring to get business done immediately because ‘he was down from Guildford and was not sure when [he] could get back’. He has an ID which appears to be for Scottish Power, which by the way has absolutely no connection with Southern Gas and Electricity.
So convincing was he, that it was only when I heard my partner dealing with this at the door as I listened with half an ear from the office that I confirmed her growing suspicion that it was all a bit dodgy – and sure enough, when we rang our own gas provider it transpired that it is almost certainly a scam.
My partner made her excuses to him.
As we speak, she is on the phone to trading standards.
