Level 42’s Mark King, High Sheriff Nick Hayward and Shanklin Town Mayor Steve Knight joined volunteers and members at Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre to launch a range of new projects and activities.
Projects include an upgraded disco, improved gym, and activities such as dance and drama clubs – as well as help towards Green Town and History projects.
Volunteer and Deputy Town Mayor Jon Gilbey said, “I have been voluntarily involved in the Centre for almost 20 years, and we have continued to develop and grow to meet the changing needs of young people and the local community. My own children have benefited from the Centre and we are always looking to generate funds to enable more and more young people to have opportunities that they otherwise would not have.”
Award-winning centre
The Centre has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and was the 4Children National Youth Centre of the Year, and has received extensive recognition of its innovative and imaginative approach to voluntary provision in the local community: many former members are still involved and 2014 will be the 50th anniversary of the Centre.
Jon concluded, “We were delighted that Mark King was able to drop into the Centre and highlight some of the work that wouldn’t happen without our team of dedicated helpers – we are planning an event for Comic Relief, this not only will be a great night for members but it also raises awareness of others less fortunate than those that use TC’s.”
