Budget Cuts: Job Cuts; Comms Reduced; 10% Fees Increase

More details of cuts.

We have just seen the full Isle of Wight council cut proposals which have just been outlined in preparation of the December Cabinet Meeting.

Here’s what they say about the Immediate actions that can be taken at cost reduction …

There are a number of actions which are being undertaken and are being proposed (some arising from the transformation programme) which include:

  • £7.25m proposal for a revised management structure (fully implemented by March 2012) which will reflect the changing nature of the organisation (36% cost reduction at senior management levels from 103 to 65 posts and 33% reduction of other principal officer posts). This will deliver a saving in 2011/12 of £6.475m. This includes a number of chief officers who have voluntarily reduced their pay and agreed not to claim for any on-island travel costs (a total saving of £100,000 per annum);
  • £1.25m (excluding posts included above) completion of the reduction of spend (50% by 2012/13 and 35% in 2011/12) in the areas of communications, policy development, performance management and strategic partnership support;
  • reducing logistical and infrastructure costs associated with the transformation programme;
  • reducing the inefficiencies caused through sickness absence by robustly implementing the Council’s attendance policy now that the appropriate information systems are in place;
  • reducing the overall supplies and services budget through improved procurement ;
  • increasing fees and charges by 10% which will include the new rate of VAT as from 1 January 2011.
