Thanks to Cheryl for this review of Burns Night at Quay Arts that sounds like it was a great night. Ed
The room was jam-packed with eager Burns lovers who really got into the spirit of things by singing along to the traditional Scottish songs piped by well-know local GP, Dr Keiron Cooney.
Everyone who turned up for this Burns bash held on Saturday night to commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth thoroughly enjoyed the meal and evenings events.
Sassenachs and Scots alike revelled in the poetry and verse of Burns who was moved to write about a mouse, a louse and haggis; beautifully read and recited by James Imri and Danny Carmichael, two local poets.
Martyn Cutler, Quay Arts’ Head Chef carried the home-made haggis aloft whilst it was piped in by Keiron Cooney but was somewhat dwarfed by Keiron’s impressive 7.4ft stature!
The ritual stabbing of the haggis was carried out by James Imri, a trained chef, who deftly handled the razor sharp blade!
Danny and James kept the audience’s rapt attention with Red Red Rose and Cotter’s Saturday Night, inspiring a few passionate souls to take to the floor and regale the audience with stories about the most-beloved Scots poet’s promiscuous and prolific ways!
The evening ended in truly traditional style with everyone linking arms and singing Auld Lang Syne – an impressive £300 was raised at this celebratory event.
