Busy day for bomb disposal unit on the Island

The Bomb Disposal had an unusually busy day on the Isle of Wight yesterday (Tuesday).

They first responded to a report made at 11.43am by a member of the public who thought they’d found an unexploded device on Tennyson Down. After investigating, the item was disposed of.

Later in the day (just after 3pm), as we alerted readers through Twitter and Facebook, parts of St Boniface Road and Mitchell Ave in Ventnor were closed as police, firefighters and the Bomb disposal team made their way to the scene of a potential unexploded device.

A workman was excavating the bottom garden of Hillside Hotel when he unearthed a device which he described as fizzing and popping and called the police.

Luckily the Bomb Disposal team reported there was nothing suspicious to be found, and the ‘fizzing and popping’ was possibly caused by sparking rubble.
