An Isle of Wight resident is calling for the Island to become the first place in the UK to “say no to Russian Standard vodka”.
Leif Marriner says,
“Russian Standard is Russian-owned vodka brand. Smirnoff is British-owned and Stolichnaya is made in Latvia and they stand with the Ukraine.
“Russian Standard Vodka is for sale in Central, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda and high street bars.
“Wetherspoons is banning a Russian beer and other pubs are banning Russian Standard vodka.”
“Boycott sale of Russian State and Oligarch-owned products”
He calls on Isle of Wight retailers to,
“Please take a stand and boycott the sale of Russian State and Oligarch owned products.
“Make the Isle of Wight the first place in the UK to say no to Russian Standard Vodka. Drink Gin instead.”
No longer stocked in Shanklin’s Central
In response Josiane Luckermans from Central in Shanklin said,
“I work in Central in Shanklin and we do not sell this one anymore. Furthermore, we will, until further notice, not be ordering Russian Vodka.”
Supermarket ban
In addition, since Leif first posted his message on social media, two supermarket chains, Morrisons and The Co-operative, have announced they will no longer stock Russian Standard vodka.
Go local
You could choose to not drink alcohol at all, or if you do like a drop of vodka, or gin for that matter, don’t forget there is an Isle of Wight Distillery which makes both products.
