Calling all Islanders: Join the Pocket Island Poetry Open and showcase your creativity

An exciting opportunity to represent the Isle of Wight in a programme of engagement running alongside the Island Games Sporting Competition has been announced.

The Pocket Island Poetry Open looks towards written poetry to reflect on ‘A View of my Island’, which could include concentrating on the Island’s natural beauty, social or political commentary, historic events and figures, or simply how the Island makes you feel.

Open to Islanders
This project is open to all Islanders of competing Islands to submit entries. Chosen poems from each Island will be included in the ‘Pocket Island Poetry’ book, to be available as a printed booklet within Guernsey, where the Games will be hosted this year, for those attending the various Island Games events, and as a digital resource to be shared with Islands taking part.

The project aims to build collaborative insight into our Islands and act as an important documentation and legacy of our creative communities.

The details for entries are as follows:

  • Entries are welcome in all languages (with an English translation provided)
  • Island languages are encouraged
  • Entries can be in any style of poetry
  • Entries are limited to 24 lines and 240 words
  • Entries will be judged by a panel of individuals based within the Bailiwick of Guernsey
  • A minimum of one chosen poem from each Island which has submitted entries will be included in the ‘Pocket Island Poetry’ booklet
  • Highly commended poems will be showcased digitally across the Island in between coverage of sports events.

To submit an entry, follow this link or email [email protected]

The final date for entries is the 30th of April 2023. If you’d like to have a go at expressing what the Isle of Wight means to you, please get involved.
