A choir from the island is looking forward to a busy year, starting with two concerts in April: one in Saint John’s Church, Newport and the other at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
The Camerata Chamber Choir will be performing movements from Karl Jenkins’ Requiem and the Armed Man at St John’s Church, Newport on Saturday 13 April at 7pm. Camerata are delighted to be returning to the venue of the successful concert in May last year with contemporary composer Patrick Hawes.
The Newport concert will be an excellent opportunity for music lovers to enjoy the choir’s finely blended harmonies, especially if they cannot make the journey for their second concert that month.
Performing at Royal Albert Hall
At 3pm on Sunday 28 April, Camerata will be performing as part of the Benedictus Choir, an invitation ensemble of members of two other singing groups.
Roughly 100-strong, the choir will again be performing The Armed Man and Requiem by the world’s most performed living composer with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. The performance will be conducted by Karl Jenkins himself and the venue, the Royal Albert Hall.
“This is a very great opportunity for us,” said the choir’s musical director, Jurgita Leistrumaite, “we are very proud and excited to be asked back to work with Karl Jenkins.”
Jenkins, once a jazz musician, has enjoyed massive international success with his classical, particularly choral, compositions. His works always bear the hallmark of his genius for beautiful melodies and irresistible chord progressions. While most will know his works, in particular Requiem and The Armed Man, almost all will be familiar with his music for television commercials.
Camerata performed the best-selling composer’s latest major work, The Peacemakers, again under Jenkins’ baton, in Grayshott in September last year.
This will be a first concert for the choir’s two new members who joined as a result of the Come and Sing recruitment events in December and January, the second of which saw interest from an almost overwhelming number of singers.
