The Island’s Camerata Chamber Choir has been invited to perform a Grayshott Concerts production
of The Peacemakers, to be conducted by the composer Dr Karl Jenkins.
The concert, on 22 September, will be a joint performance with the Excelsis Choir and Marylebone Camerata at St Luke’s church in Grayshott, Hampshire.
Camerata were invited following the success of their last two spring concerts. The first, Jenkins’ Stabat Mater and this year, works composed and conducted by the English composer Patrick Hawes.
Fantastic opportunity for Island singers
This is a real opportunity for an Island music group and is the result of the commitment of its members; all amateur singers. Speech therapist, occasional choir soloist and outdoor adventurer Bryony Rust described her choir experience: ‘We just love singing and it is massively rewarding to be part of a group continually striving for excellence.’
Bryony and the other members would also add that the main driver of the choir’s accomplishment is musical director Jurgita Leistrumaite. Jurgita came to the Island from Lithuania in 2005 and teaches music at Platform One and the Priory School and is unravelling the intricacies of musicology for a Master’s Thesis. ‘I am interested only in performing the music well so I require commitment and practice. We have good voices and the blend is all-important.’
Camerata has also been invited to be part of the same collaboration of choirs working with Jenkins in April, this time the accompanying orchestra and the venue will be rather grander: the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Albert Hall, again to be conducted by the composer.
Island performance
The choir’s next Island concert will be on 3 November at the more informal but no less majestic setting of Wolverton Manor, Shorwell where loyal followers and music lovers will be able to hear the first ever performance of the beautiful new composition, Night written for Camerata by Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miskinis, to the words of William Blake.
Although tickets are sold out for the concert on Saturday in Grayshott, there may be a last minute allocation, which could be available via the choir’s Website
