Its intention is to give advice and guidance on fire safety prevention measures in care homes, including giving an update on government legislation.

The seminar is being held at the community learning centre at Westridge Leisure Centre in Ryde between 9am and 1pm on Friday 30 May.

Types of fire alarms to use and advice on refurbishment, construction and redesign are also topics that will be discussed.

Fire and rescue staff will also talk about the Rose Park Care Home disaster in Scotland that resulted in the deaths of 14 residents. A report found a blaze started in a cupboard and spread through the building.

Worthwhile event
Councillor Steve Stubbings is Executive member for adult social care and community well-being and said:

“The Isle of Wight does have a large elderly population and many do rely on the services care homes provide in their later life.

“It is important that care homes have robust fire safety plans in place to protect their residents and I would encourage anyone who owns or manages a care home to attend this worthwhile event.”

Anyone wishing to attend should register their interest by emailing their information to [email protected].
