Census data shows positive trend in overall health for Isle of Wight residents

Latest Census data from the Office of National Statistics tells a slightly encouraging story about the general health of those living on the Isle of Wight.

Very good health
According to the data, in 2021 43.8 per cent of Isle of Wight residents described their health on the National census as “very good”. That’s a rise of 0.7 per cent, increasing from 43.1 per cent in 2011.

Good health
Those describing their health as “good” fell from 36.4 per cent to 36.1 per cent. These are age-standardised proportions.

Very bad and bad health
The proportion of Isle of Wight residents describing their health as “very bad” remained at 1.3 per cent, while those describing their health as “bad” remained at 4.5 per cent.

These data reflect people’s own opinions in describing their overall health on a five point scale, from very good to very bad.

Data collected during Covid
Census 2021 was conducted during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. This may have influenced how people perceived and rated their health, and therefore may have affected how people chose to respond.
