Changes to Isle of Wight council services such as waste collection, leisure facilities and more on the coming Bank Holiday Monday

Monday 19th September, the date of Late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

This bank holiday will operate in the same way as others, with special arrangements for certain council services. Please see the information below: 

Adult Social Care and Housing Needs
Offices will be closed and normal service resumes on Tuesday 20th September. 

  • Outside of these times urgent calls should be directed to Wightcare by calling (01983) 821105.
  • If you are worried about a vulnerable adult, please contact Wightcare at (01983) 821105 (24 hours).

You do not need to know everything about a vulnerable adult and what is happening before you contact us.

IN AN EMERGENCY CONTACT THE POLICE BY DIALLING 999.

Bereavement Services

  • Open as normal.

Crematorium Grounds and Book of Remembrance
The grounds can be accessed at any time, but if the gates are closed, please park on the road outside and use the pedestrian gate.

All cremation documentation, burial forms and music should be delivered at least three clear office working days before each service, especially over this period.

Building Control
Building Control will continue to operate a Dangerous Structure out-of-hours service over the bank holiday.

If there is immediate danger and a threat to life, call 999. For all other situations, please call (01983) 821105.

Children’s Services
Offices will be closed and normal service resumes on Tuesday 20th September. 

If you are worried a child is, or at risk of, suffering, neglect or abuse please contact the Children’s Reception Team:

  • Tel 0300 300 0117 (available 24 hours a day).

Contact Centre and Help Centres
Newport Help Centre will be open 10am-4pm to enable residents to sign the book of condolence.

All other services will be closed.

Coroner’s Office
The Coroner’s Office will be closed. It reopens as normal on Tuesday 20th September.

Council buildings or land
For emergencies involving council-owned buildings, please contact Wightcare at (01983) 821105.

Floating bridge
Cowes floating bridge is operating as normal

  • First crossing from West Cowes at 5am, first crossing from East Cowes at 5.10am
  • Last crossing from West Cowes at 12.20am, last crossing from East Cowes at 12.25am

Please check the Floating Bridge website for live status before travel as the above timetable may change due to any potential adverse weather.

Highways emergencies
Flooding, fallen trees, highway obstruction, traffic lights not working etc – please contact Island Roads, tel: 822440

Cliff lift:

  • 6am – 10am Open
  • 10am – 3.30pm  Closed
  • 3.30pm – 9pm Open

The Heights:

  • 6am – 10am Open

Medina:

  • 6am – 10am Open
  • 10am – 3.30pm  Closed
  • 3.30pm – 9.30pm Open

Theatre:

  • Not open, no shows were scheduled to take place. 

Westridge:

  • 6am – 10am Open
  • 10am – 3.30pm  Closed
  • 3.30pm – 9pm Open

Libraries

  • All libraries are closed. Re-open as usual on Tuesday 20th September. 

Record Office

The Record Office is not open on Mondays or bank holidays.

Dinosaur Isle Museum

  • Not open on Mondays in the winter period.

Cowes Maritime Museum

  • Closed 

Museum of Island History

  • Closed on Mondays

Newport Roman Villa

  • Closed 

Planning
The planning department will be closed for the bank holiday.

Planning Enforcement complaints can continue to be made anytime online, and this can include reporting any alleged illegal works to protected trees.

Recycling and Waste Collection
Residents are being advised that waste, recycling and garden subscriptions collections will see one week of change to their usual collection day next week (week commencing 19th September), 

This will mean that all waste, recycling and garden waste collections for the week commencing Monday 19th September will run one day late.

Offices will be closed and normal service resumes on Tuesday 20 September. If you wish to talk to a specific officer please make an appointment.

Revenues, Benefits, Parking Services, Blue Badges and Payments Team
Online applications remain available for council tax/local council tax support/housing benefit and Blue Badges.
