This in from Ceri at Quay Arts, in her own words. Ed
Braving the cold and taking up the challenge, Doug swam across the Solent back in September in just under 50 minutes.
With his sponsorship money now collected, Doug decided to show his appreciation for the work done by the team at Quay Arts and chose this local arts charity to benefit from his swim, along with the charity-funded West Wight Sports Centre who shared the funds he raised.
Former competitive swimmer
In his youth Doug swam competitively for both West Wight Swimming Club and the Isle of Wight Swim Team.
He took up the challenge to swim the Solent after returning to the pool for some casual exercise after many years away.
Alldred: “Quay Arts .. really important hub for the arts”
Doug said,
“Sea swimming is very different to doing lengths in a pool, and the sensation of just seeing darkness below you is a little unsettling at first. However, the sense of achievement when you arrive back on dry land, and knowing you’ve supported some great local charities along the way is great.
“Quay Arts is a really important hub for the arts on the Isle of Wight, and as a musician supporting a charity which promotes and encourages not just music but all forms of art is a cause which is really close to my heart. We are so privileged to have such a thriving arts scene on the Island these days, and Quay Arts is right at the centre of that.”
Quay Arts would like to say a big thank you to Doug and appreciates his fundraising efforts.
