Cliff Michelmore, Cowes-born, passes away

TV presenter and producer, Cliff Michelmore, sadly passed away yesterday (16th March) at Petersfield Hospital in Hampshire.

Born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1919, Cliff served as a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force during World War II. His broadcasting career started on the British Forces Network radio and he went on to become a well-known voice on radio and face on TV.

It was Cliff who interviewed 17-year-old David Bowie in 1964, when he was introduced as the spokesman and founder of “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men”.

From Tonight to Holiday
Our more mature readers will best know Cliff his current affairs programme, Tonight, which ran from 1957 to 1965. He also anchored many major news items over the years including the assassination of John F Kennedy and the return of the Apollo 13 spacecraft.

Our younger readers will remember him from the popular Holiday series on BBC1.
