We didn’t get around to covering the news of Bembridge Airport’s closure last week, so here’s a brief summary of the situation.
The closure was reported widely after the those managing the airport, Britten Norman (BN) Group, failed to reach a lease agreement with the landowner last year.
The result was that BN Group, who according to a statement spend around £250,000 a year in the upkeep of the runway and air traffic control, chose not to renew their Civil Aviation Authority license.
According to the report by the BBC, the CAA are happy for the airport to remain open, even though unlicensed, but Laurie Gavaghan, chairman of the Isle of Wight Flying Club, says that without air traffic control, those bringing commercial passengers won’t be able to land.
He went on to say that could result in a loss of around £1,000,000 a year to the Island economy.
We’ll let you know if we hear any further reports.
