Commissioner set to appoint Island assistant

Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes is looking to appoint an assistant to support his work and represent him for those living on the Isle of Wight.

In the six months since taking up office, the Commissioner has travelled extensively across all corners of Hampshire and made several visits to the island, but, he would like to do more.

Role of Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner
The Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner will be responsible for supporting the Commissioner with aspects of his role on the island.

This will provide better representation for island residents, and ensure they receive the same level of service and benefits from the work of the Commissioner as those living on the mainland.

Engage and build relationships
The role of the part-time post holder will be to engage and build relationships with relevant community groups, public bodies and organisations on the island to better understand the policing needs of the community.

The Assistant will then liaise with the Commissioner on how these needs can best be met and incorporated within the Police and Crime Plan.

Regular briefings
This will be achieved by regular briefings and updating the Commissioner on all matters raised by residents, the local authority, voluntary and criminal justice partners.

The Assistant will also represent the Commissioner in meeting with members of the public, community groups, partner organisations and other elected representatives on the island.

Talking about the appointment, Simon Hayes said:

“In order that I can serve the whole of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to best effect, I have always believed the Isle of Wight deserves its own representative to help deliver my Police and Crime Plan and to be a voice for island residents.

He added:

“On my second day in office after my election in November 2012, I announced it was my aim to appoint someone to be my eyes and ears on the Isle of Wight. I am delighted to say that I am now in a position to begin my search for that person. I want to find the best person for the job. I want the right individual who can engage on my behalf with the island communities and provide me with an in-depth understanding of the community safety issues affecting its residents.”
