In case you missed it earlier in the week, a Cowes family is rallying support for their compassionate and fun-loving son, Arlo Lambie, after he received a devastating diagnosis of a rare grade 4 brain tumour.
In October, Arlo began experiencing minor headaches, which quickly escalated into hydrocephalus, a condition requiring urgent neurosurgery. His journey has since continued with daily radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions at Southampton General Hospital.
The challenges ahead
16-year-old Arlo spends weekdays near the hospital for treatment and returns home to Cowes at weekends when he can. The family’s challenges extend beyond the emotional toll.
They face financial hardship from reduced work opportunities, the cost of essential treatments not covered by the NHS, and the expenses of living away from home.
A crowdfunding campaign has already raised £53,000. However, the family needs significantly more to ensure Arlo can access all the care and treatments he requires.
Overwhelming support
The Lambie family has expressed deep gratitude for the financial donations and heartfelt messages they’ve received. They are also immensely thankful for the care provided by the NHS and the support of charities including Young Lives vs Cancer, Daisy Chains, Abbey’s Heroes, The Teenage Cancer Trust, Jean’s House and Sophie’s Wish.
Arlo’s dad, Alex, reflected on the diagnosis, saying,
“This was heart-breaking news for Arlo, for us, his younger brother, and our entire family.”
Despite the challenges, Arlo’s positivity remains a source of inspiration. He said,
“I don’t want people to be sad. I just want to be happy in the here and now, because that’s all there is.”
A community effort to help Arlo
The costs are substantial, with £10,000 covering just one month’s supply of non-NHS-funded treatment. The family is appealing to their local community for continued support. They believe that if every Isle of Wight resident donated £1, they could meet the costs and secure the care Arlo needs.
Arlo’s school friends have also stepped up. They are organising a Wear What Makes You Happy Day on 7th February 2025, inviting all Island schools to participate in this Mufti Day to raise funds and awareness for Arlo’s fight.
How you can help
Arlo’s determination to embrace life—through pizza nights, films, college days and dreaming of mountains and football matches—continues to inspire those around him. His family invites everyone to stand with them during this challenging time.
