Conservative Isle of Wight councillor resigns, forcing another by-election (update 2)

In a recent development at the Isle of Wight council, Councillor Gary Peace has stepped down from his role as the elected Conservative councillor for the Ventnor and St Lawrence electoral division.

He formally informed the chief executive and monitoring officer of his decision to resign, effective immediately.

By-election ahead
Gary Peace’s resignation will now force a by-election for the Ventnor and St Lawrence area.

If two local government electors for the Isle of Wight Council area give notice in writing that they wish an election to be held to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held.

This will ensure that residents in the ward are represented at the earliest opportunity.

Silence from Peace?
News OnTheWight contacted Councillor Peace over the weekend seeking the reason behind his resignation, but at time of publishing had not heard back. We’ll update readers when we know more.

Mr Peace failed to respond to News OnTheWight, but informed the local democracy reporter that he had resigned “for personal reasons”.
