Council confirms salt supplies for winter

The Isle of Wight Council has a full stock of salt ready for treating the Island’s highways during freezing temperatures.

The council has over 1000 tonnes of salt already in storage at a facility in Newport, with an extra 500 tonnes due to arrive shortly. This compares with the council having used less than 1300 tonnes last year.

State of the art gritters
The council has six state of the art gritting vehicles on 24 hour standby, with a seventh vehicle in reserve should it be needed. The Island’s road network has a number of sensors which monitor the temperature of the surface, and detailed weather forecasts are constantly supplied to the council’s highways department.

During salting runs, the local authority will routinely treat the Island’s principle routes, of which a list can be found on the council’s website at www.iwight.com/gritting.

Drivers are advised to always take extra care in cold conditions on the roads, and to ensure their vehicles are clear of ice and snow before setting off on a journey.
