In the list of proposed cuts to Isle of Wight council services to close the £11.6m funding gap are two items concern the Cowes chain ferry.
Currently it costs £1.50 to cross on the chain ferry (or floating bridge or float boat as it’s know to some) in a car. The council is proposing that this be raised to £1.80 – a 20% increase.
It’s unclear what the charges might become for other vehicles – currently a lorry is £5.10 and large van is £2.10. We’ll ask the council and get back to you.
Voucher savings could be nearly halved
Regular users of the service could be hit twice.
The multi-ticket vouchers currently provide a discount of between 40-45%. The council is looking to cut this to 20-25%.
It’s hoped that the two schemes would lead to savings / increased earnings of £90,000.
