Paul Thorley from Cowes Network has issued a fundraising appeal following a record-breaking high tide on Monday night (8th April 2024), which inundated the high street of Cowes with floodwaters.
As you might expect, this has left many local businesses grappling with significant damage.
Challenges for insured businesses
Due to their locations, numerous properties along the high street struggle to secure flood insurance.
Those that do often face steep excess charges and numerous exclusions, adding financial strain to the already burdened business owners.
A community’s response to crisis
The flooding represents another setback for these local businesses, still recovering from the economic impact of Covid-19 Lockdowns.
Recounting the emotional toll on business owners whose establishments suffered extensive damage, Paul said,
“I saw one lady burst into tears when she got to her shop on Tuesday morning.”
In response to the disaster, Cowes Network aims to bolster the affected businesses by rallying community support. The network has kickstarted the fundraising efforts with an initial donation of £500, encouraging others in the community to contribute whatever they can.
Event and fundraising details
All funds raised will directly assist businesses on the high street that have been directly affected by the flooding.
The official announcement of this fundraising initiative will take place at The Heron in Cowes tonight (Friday), where more than 90 guests are expected to attend.
You can show your support by heading over to the Go Fund Me appeal page and making a donation.
