After the weather prevented any play over the previous two weekends, Ventnor Cricket Club’s pre-season friendly fixtures finally got under way at Steephill on Saturday.

Ventnor’s Southern League Premier Division rivals South Wilts, who won the title last season, were the visitors on Saturday and rattled up 311-4 against an under-strength home attack.

Ryan Burl and James Hayward each scored centuries before Ventnor replied with 215-7 in the 45 overs a side contest, Jake George (46) and James Cheek (57) top scoring.

On Sunday, Southampton University defeated the Islanders by six wickets. Neil Westhorpe (61) and Hugh Calloway (43) were main contributors to a modest total of 168, a total knocked off inside 34 overs by the students.
