Ventnor defeated at Havant
Ventnor lost by five wickets in Saturday’s ECB Southern Electric Premier Division clash at Havant.
Asked to bat first on an inevitably bowler-friendly pitch, the visitors were given a decent 45 run start by talented left hander, Ben Duggan, who made 40 and Tom Friend (28), before collapsing to 124 all out against Havant’s predominantly spin attack. Only Chris Ridley, with 21, providing any resistance.
Havant’s response stuttered as they pursued their modest target with Ventnor skipper, Mark Holmes, impressing with 3-40, as the home side struggled to 55-4.
However, an unbeaten 28 from Stuart Ransley saw Havant home with 15 overs remaining.
Alton are the visitors to Newclose on Saturday in the first of eight all-day fixtures. The match starts at 11.30am. Both sides are seeking their first wins of a rain affected start to the season.
Corbin’s fine innings leads Ventnor to victory
Ventnor’s youthful second team made it two wins out of two, after a three wicket victory over United Services in Hampshire League Division 1 at Steephill on Saturday.
An impressive bowling display frustrated the visitors, who slipped to 115-7 as
teenagers George Willis (3-45), Toby Corbin (3-17), Ben Herridge (2-37) made regular in-roads. Collingham with 41 hit later order runs before Charlie Calloway returned to dismiss the Navy side for 161, finishing with 2-30.
It was Collingham the bowler who had Ventnor in early trouble after tea, his three wicket blast reducing the home team to 38-4.
The recovery was led by 17 year old Corbin who underlined his promise in a
fine knock of 73 with five fours and four sixes. In a century stand with Martin Blackman (30), the pair took their side to the brink of victory before skipper, Ben Woodhouse with 15 not out, saw his side home despite the loss of three further wickets.
The team travel to Ellingham on Saturday.
Third team lose at Northwood
An experienced Northwood first team proved too strong for a valiant young Ventnor side in the Island League Division 1 on Saturday.
Skipper Ali Cotton elected to bat first but saw his side struggle against the home team’s attack on a rain affected pitch. Pierre Kriel with 29 and Cotton (30) top scored in a modest total of 111, veteran left arm spinner Simon Goldsmith taking 4-9.
Nick Heelan, with 41 not out, led the Cowes side to an eight wicket win, 13 year old Ben Attrill the pick of the bowlers with 1-15 from his five overs.
Newport are the visitors to Steephill on Saturday.
Emphatic win in T20 for Ventnor
Ventnor moved into the second round of the Southern Electric Cup with a resounding win in Sunday’s T20 clash with Sparsholt.
A blazing unbeaten innings of 62 from Marc-Antony Eysele led his side to a nine wicket success in only 11.1 overs in front of a sun drenched Steephill crowd.
The left hander cracked seven fours and four sixes as he and Tom Friend (34) made short work of a target of 115.
Earlier, Friend with 3-32, Mark Holmes (2-19) and Adam Wilson (2-24) did the damage as Sparsholt were restricted to 114-8 from their 20 overs.
