Lots on offer with Ryde Harriers running club

Tom Blackwell

Thanks to Tom for this latest update from the Ryde Harriers. Ed

Tuesday night runs at Ryde Harriers offer runners lots of variety during the summer series. In the past two weeks there has been a track race, a road race and a pair of multi-terrains.

Over on the track it was an opportunity for the speed merchants to really test their legs for the first time, with a 1,500m race in perfect conditions.

Four runners managed to dip under the five minutes barrier with the first three finishers setting new personnel bests. Winning the race was Tom Blackwell in a new pb of 4:47.

He was closely followed by a strong-finishing Dom Jacobs, also setting a new pb by 35 seconds in a time of 4:50. Third home was Simon Newman in a another excellent pb time of 4:56 with Simon McMorran just behind in 4:47. 15 runners in all took on the challenge and Jonathan Norton the final runner across the line in 7:06.

Multi-terrian runs
The most recent club night saw multi-terrian runs from both Ryde and Sandown. In Ryde, runners took on a course the cut through Ryde golf course and Dame Anthony’s Common.

In Sandown it was a hillier test up to the top of Culver Down and back with Pete White and Tom Blackwell claiming the nomination points as they were both only 20 seconds outside of their stated time.

Portsmouth A.C Lakeside
Ryde Harriers also fielded three runners in the most recent Portsmouth A.C Lakeside series race.

This 5k competition is run every last Wednesday evening of the month and the course offers the possibility of setting a good time with its virtual flat nature. First home for Harriers was Tom Blackwell in a new pb of 17:47 with women’s captain Sarah Kavanagh next home in 20:19 and the seventh women to finish.

The trio was completed by John Randles, running his second series race in a time of 27:55. Islander Harrison Curling, who competes for Aldershot, Farnham and District, had an excellent run to finish third in 16:02. The next Lakeside race is 2nd July at 7pm.

Next race
The next open race is the Brading 10km race on Sunday 29th June from Smallbrook Stadium with the event starting at 11am.
