As we tweeted live from the council meeting last night, it was announced by Cllr Giles that Sustrans funding for the extension of the Cowes to Newport cycle path to link with the Newport to Sandown cycle path had been approved. This in from the council in their own words. Ed
Construction work has begun to link the Cowes to Newport cycle track at Dodnor with the Newport to Sandown cycle track at Shide. It follows the council’s successful application for £90,000 of funding from transport charity group and Department for Transport partner, Sustrans.
This will be matched by funding already secured by the council through developer contributions for the scheme.
Several improvements
The funding will allow for several improvements including the resurfacing and widening of a path at Dodnor, with slopes levelled out to make it easier for both pedestrians and cyclists
An upgraded crossing facility is to be installed adjacent to the County Hall car park with a new segregated cycleway provided on the footway at Coppins Bridge, including new signage making it clear for people to follow.
Path resurfacing
The scheme also includes the resurfacing of the path between Furlongs and Shide, making it wider and also cutting back overgrown vegetation to improve safety.
Cllr Edward Giles, Cabinet member responsible for Highways said “It is pleasing that Sustrans has chosen to work in partnership with the council to improve our important pedestrian and cycle network.
“Once the works are completed, cyclists will be able to enjoy an almost predominantly off-road route between Sandown and Cowes.
“We should also recognise that the improvements on the paths will also make it easier and safer for pedestrians, in particular those who use mobility scooters, wheelchairs or with pushchairs. Some of the sections are currently un-even and the improvements will tackle that problem.”
Work started this week
The works began on 18 July and should be completed by the end of the year. Some closures to the route between Dodnor and Shide will be required during the building works.
