We’ve had some VB readers contact us asking how many of the towns and villages of the Island rang bells this morning at 8:12 to mark the start of the Olympics.
Here’s an example: “Any idea why the distinct lack of bells to be heard at 8.12am? Here in Ryde at least, out on our roof terrace on time and not so much as a tinkle to be heard! A real shame. Were other parts of the Island a little more Olympic spirited?”
Let us all know what rang and where
What better way than to ask you? – we thought. What rang and where?
About half an hour before the event this morning, VB sent out a Tweet/Facebook update to see what people on the Isle of Wight were planning to do …
Everyone in the UK is being encouraged to ring bells at 8:12am “as quickly & as loudly as possible for 3 minutes” to mark the start of the Olympics. Have you got any plans to ring anything?
Mixed response
Back came over fifty responses bringing a mixure of humour, information and some people who are clearly fed up with the Olympic before it’s even started!
They’re below for you to have a browse through.
We’ve got some to be started
Bells within earshot
In the Yes column goes Ventnor, Cowes & Carisbrooke
We heard one of the churches ringing our their bell.
Denise Cronin said, “Holy Trinity in Cowes rang theirs.” StuandJulie Gough also heard them, “We heard bells in Cowes!!”
Mandy Kennedy didn’t hear them, but perhaps that because it sounds like it was quite noisy around her house anyway – “Not much happened in Cowes except my neighbour out with a handbell, I stood at the door with my phone ringing!”
Terry Adams said, “Someone was ringing handbells here on Carisbrooke estate. Was good that someone bothered :)”
In the ‘No’ column
The No column has Sandown; Brading and a confirmation on Ryde
Liz Watson, “Didn’t hear anything in Sandown!”. Jane ‘Kingsofleon’ Followill was disapointed, “Gutted Brading church did nothing. :(” Darren Smith, “Not a Dicky bird in Ryde.”
No-Bell peace prize?
The best comment came from Robert ‘CiderBelly’ Auger: “The Isle of Wight appears to be this year’s winner of the NO-BELL peace prize!!”
So did your area ring it from the roof tops, or qualify for the No-Bell peace prize? Let us know in the comments.
