Damien Nettles: Police Start New Search For Body

This just in from the Police, in their own words. Oor thoughts go out to Damien’s friends and family at this very difficult time. Ed

Police investigating the possible murder of missing Isle of Wight teenager Damien Nettles are starting a new search for his body.

Hampshire Constabulary sealed off an area of marshland next to the Newport-Cowes cycleway and footpath in the Stag Lane area of Newport earlier this morning (Thursday, May 12, 2011).

Specialist police officers will be using a range of techniques and technology to examine the ground for human remains over the next few days.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Dave Powell of Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Department said: “We are responding to information received about the possible whereabouts of Damien Nettles’ body. The area we’re now searching was identified after the police received more information about what could have happened to Damien after his disappearance in November 1996. We’re not in a position to discuss the details because it is important for the police to protect how they gather sensitive information.

“There have been false and malicious allegations about possible burial sites for Damien’s body over the past 14 years. Such unfounded speculation has upset the Nettles family and wasted police time and resources. Therefore, careful consideration has been given to our decision to examine this marshland. It is important for the community to keep expectations for this search in perspective. We cannot guarantee that anything will be found at this stage.”

I notice that on the IWCP website there are photographs of the search actually taking place. I’d just like to say how hideous I think such an action is.
The County Press may now be a tabloid size, but it certainly doesn’t have to act like one. Those photographs should be taken down immediately; they are ghoulish, voyeuristic and vulgar.

Sorry Matt, you must be looking at images I cannot access. Those I can see are distant shots of police officers doing a difficult job. In my book they are not ‘ghoulish, voyeuristic and vulgar’. ‘Scenes of crime’ searches are on our screens and in all our newspapers – not just tabloids – daily. In fact the further from home we go, the more graphic they become… Read more »

I take your point ABC and it’s true that these types of scenes are on our screens and in our papers regularly, but it doesn’t mean we want to see them.

Successful newspapers (and indeed all media) are finely tuned to giving readers/viewers/listeners what they want and it is easier than ever to tell editors what is and isn’t acceptable.

Could I suggest you contact the editor of the County Press, Alan Marriott, and express your views. He would welcome the feedback and if enough people share your views that will be reflected in editorial policy.

the police arranged all the media to turn up at 12pm, I just hope its not a publicity stunt. Why would the police allow media access inside a police cordon and allow them to be filmed while they work?

The gazette hasn’t covered it because the editor has probably done a runner, Any one heard about the hush club? is due to re-open?

Bye Jay Kappa!

The photographs are of police experts “Searching”

Get a grip! There is nothing in the IWCP to suggest they are ghoulish, voyeuristic or vulgar.

I never said they are ghoulish, voyeuristic or vulgar.

You might disagree if it were your son or daughter they were looking for.

This is not a publicity stunt, it is a sombre hunt for the mortal remains of a young man who may have been murdered. There were a lot of people on the Island that knew Damian very well, and images such as these are very upsetting and personal.

I really hope your right Matt. It’s not that often police will invite media to film them searching on such a high profile case like Damien’s . Why not get the police media department to take a couple of photos and give them to the media to use with press statements. And on both audio interviews the DCI clearly takes a long pause when asked if they… Read more »

This type of coverage is there for a reason no matter how untasteful it is. They are jarring peoples consciences. It might just bring somebody forward whose was afraid to come forward at first.
