Isle of Wight artist Dee Young, who has a BA Honours in Fine Art, is currently showcasing her first exhibition of portraits at Monkton Arts’ Acons Gallery.
The exhibition, which runs until 21st July, is a vibrant collection of oil on canvas works inspired by the book, Out On An Island.
Inspiration
Dee reveals that reading Out On An Island sparked her interest in portraying individuals who embody authenticity and resilience.
She explains,
“I wanted to paint portraits of some of the people, who I know, are out on the Island.
“People who are true to who they are, and not submissive to homophobia and bigotry.”
Expanding artistic horizons
Known for her specialism in abstract art, Dee embraced this new direction with enthusiasm.
“If I only had one style, I would be dead as an artist,” she notes, quoting Hans Hoffmann.
This departure into portraiture represents a significant personal and professional challenge for the artist.
The journey to portraits
Dee’s decision to venture into portraiture was driven by a desire to push her boundaries as a painter. She shares,
“This is my very first exhibition of portraits painted in oil on canvas.
“I wanted to challenge myself as a painter, and the ‘Out on an Island’ book gave me the confidence to do so.”
Community support
The characters depicted in Dee’s portraits have played a crucial role in bringing this exhibition to life.
Reflecting on the collaborative nature of her work, she adds,
“I am delighted that the characters portrayed have helped me achieve this exhibition.”
