‘Deep and fast flowing water’ expected as Environment Agency issue flood alert

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for Gurnard Luck.

The alert says:

Flooding is possible for: Gurnard Luck, Gurnard.

Be prepared.

The water level in the Gurnard Luck is high and rising. In the last 12 hours, 30mm of rain has been recorded in Cowes. This is a large amount in a short period of time. High tide at Cowes is at 11:45 this morning (20/10/21).

The river will rise for three hours after high water (until 14:45) before the river can drain with the lowering tide. Properties nearest to the river in Marsh Road may experience garden flooding throughout this period.

Further rain is forecast later this afternoon and overnight with between 20 to 40mm expected.

At high tide tonight (23:55 on 20/10/21) and tomorrow lunchtime (12:20 on 21/10/21), river levels could be similar or slightly higher than experienced today.

Garden flooding may therefore occur for several hours over each high water. We continue to monitor the forecast. We will keep the river clear of reported blockages.

Until water levels fall with each lowering tide, please keep away from the river at Gurnard Road Bridge.  Water will be deep and fast flowing. This message will be updated by 16:00 on Thursday 21/10/2021.
