Le Veness - John Peck start demolition

Demolition of derelict Le Veness building on Ventnor’s seafront underway (video)

Demolition work has begun on the site of Le Veness on Ventnor’s seafront.

The site has remained derelict for decades, but work is now underway to clear the site by John Peck Construction.

Application “Pending Consideration”
An application to construct a five-storey building with parking is, according to the Isle of Wight council’s planning site, still “Pending Consideration”.

However, previous permission was granted in 2004, along with a Lawful Development Certificate in 2010.

Soil analysis and further tests
The owner, Mark Lilly, told News OnTheWight,

“When demolition is completed we then have to do soil analysis and other specialist tests to then design a suitable footing for the new building.”

Delayed to take place out of season
Work to clear the site had been planned for earlier in the year, but Mark explained,

“We delayed demolition from the summer until now at the request of the local businesses so they could capitalise on the summer trade without us interrupting or putting their customers off with the noise and dust generated with the demolition process.

“Weather permitting, the aim is to have the site clear by mid December.”

Something tasteful and resilient please. Modern is fine, but not in the hands of second rate architects. Ventnor seafront has enough cheap looking architecture, I have no doubt locals and visitors alike would like something a little more sophisticated and thoughtful this time please.

Great – now all we need to get sorted are the amusements and broad lands – both of which have planning permissions that have been renewed multiple times
