The ‘designated public place orders’ – or DPPOs – are now in operation in parts of Sandown and Lake.
The orders give police powers to take alcohol away from anyone who is deemed to be causing a nuisance or annoyance as a result of drinking alcohol. They are not a total ban on drinking alcohol in public areas, meaning anyone who drinks responsibly can continue to do so.
Areas included in the DPPOs are Culver Parade, the Esplanade, the High Street and Los Altos Park in Sandown.
In Lake, roads include The Fairway and Lake Cliff Gardens.
Clamping down on anti social behaviour
Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public protection, said:
“People drinking alcohol irresponsibly can lead to anti social behaviour and the police and the council are working together to clamp down on this.
“DPPOs are not a ban on drinking alcohol in public places. If you are drinking responsibly then there should be no concerns and you are welcome to enjoy a drink responsibly. However, the DPPOs give police an important ability to act should they feel people are causing anti social behaviour through the effects of alcohol.”
Areas in Ryde, East Cowes, Newport and the West Wight already have DPPOs in place.
