Can we please be quite clear about this; Wightlink is a tradeable financial asset, wholely owned by the Australian McQuarie Bank, and managed to return the best profit to its shareholders that it can. For goodness sake; don’t expect it to provide an efficient ferry service across The Solent ;-) That went out years ago… When the Blessed Margaret Thatcher flogged off British Rail’s Sealink for £6m… Read more »

Hi Mike…I also remember from MT at that time – “The wishes of the Islanders are paramount”! :-)

Oh my goodness! Well done Mike Starke, you’ve managed to link Margaret Thatcher, oil and The Falkland Islands with a story about a revised timetable on the Wight Link catamaran in just one slightly insane rant. Congratulations, you win the award for the most off topic, confused post in quite some time!! (I suppose, thinking about it, you could have squeezed in something about IW Council too… Read more »

Quite a jump from a poxy 20 minute ferry crossing to the Falklands War!! If you want to constantly complain about ferries people, bigger off to the mainland.
If people loved the Island as much as they say they do, they shouldn’t be so obsessed with the high speed escape pods!

I don’t think it’s people ‘constantly complaining’ that’s the issue. I think its the fact that these ferries are relatively new and since entering service, they have been a tad on the un-reliable side. Lets not forget that people expect progress these days and the Wight Riders are smaller and slower than their predecessors. I think this is why customers are so ‘concerned’. I don’t think it… Read more »

25* minutes on this route. Lymington – Yarmouth was 30 minutes, now 45*. That’s progress under Macquarie.

*when they are running.

OK as mentioned above. If you don’t like depending on a ferry service, move to the mainland and shut up. You are not compelled to live here.

I don’t think that many people do like depending on the ferry services at the fares they charge… but at the end of the day we accept that’s the price you pay for living in a very much pleasant part of the UK. What I think people are entitled to in this day and age is a reliable ferry service and they do expect better from an… Read more »

You can pull up the draw bridge and chase us away with your pitch forks as often as you like, but the call for a fixed link will never go away, and opinions one day will swing more towards having one, just not in our lifetime.

Nope, not compelled to live here, but who will buy my house, certainly none of the islanders they are as poor as church mice, as they have to pay exhorbitant ferry fares to get decent wages. Perhaps some retired couple would like to come over to Gods Waiting Room, but they too have to watch the pennies even more. I’m stuck here but I enjoy the island,… Read more »

I am relieved that Cath only finds me “slightly insane” and “confused”. We OAPs get called much worse now we are lumped in with all the other more traditional hate targets to take the heat off failed leaderships at local, national and international level. Which brings me to the apparently “confused” rant. The point is, all these things – ferries, Falklands, fuel – are, in fact, linked.… Read more »

Wise words Mr Starke. Only a paid up member of the raving loony party would think that the ferries being owned by an Australian investment bank is good for islanders. Or that the world was a better place post privatisation. Do you know if you are on the best tarrif? I’m bu**** if I do. The ferry company exists to make a profit. The needs of islanders… Read more »

“The point is, all these things – ferries, Falklands, fuel – are, in fact, linked. They are all symptoms of the failed socio-economic system Western governments are pretending can be mended so that their commercial paymasters can continue to give each other bumper bonuses. I know; that is a slight oversimplification, but neither VB readers nor I have all day for this.” I think a ferry not… Read more »

Just as a side comment…I had an appointment on the mainland yesterday. Saw the train in as I got to the esplanade and asked the guard on board which way he was going. Shanklin love – he said, so I started to walk up the pier to make sure I caught the Cat that connected to my train. Lo and Behold, the island train passed me a… Read more »
