Donna Jones announces intention to stand in Hampshire and Isle of Wight mayoral elections

Donna Jones, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, has announced her intention to stand as a candidate in the May 2026 mayoral elections.

Hampshire and the Solent region is part of a fast-tracked devolution initiative and the intention is for a new Mayoral Combined Authority to be established, covering Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Elections for a Mayor are scheduled for May 2026.

A major change in local governance
Ms Jones described the move as one of the biggest changes in governance in a generation.

The new Mayor will have responsibility for key services such as transport, housing, skills and the economy.

Jones highlighted the region’s strengths, including its two airports, two major shipping ports, two national parks, and critical energy infrastructure. She also noted the presence of leading defence companies and the opportunities devolution could bring for business promotion and investment.

Public safety and governance changes
Ms Jones stressed the importance of embedding public protection within the new authority.

She warned that under current proposals, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and governance of the fire service are likely to be absorbed into the Mayor’s office.

She argued that community safety must be a key focus for the new authority, reflecting the unique needs of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Donna Jones to run for Mayor
Confirming her intentions to stand as a candidate in the May 2026 mayoral elections, Ms Jones stated that she is committed to ensuring public safety remains central to the governance of the new Combined Authority.

The devolution deal marks a significant shift in how local services will be managed, with more details expected in the coming months.
