Don’t Cop Out: A plea for the future – all welcome to climate and ecological emergency event

News shared by DON’T COP OUT, in their own words, Ed

This week World leaders have been meeting in Glasgow for the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference. It is the most important environmental conference ever.

DON’T COP OUT has been set up to bring people and organisations together for this moment in time.

Meet this Saturday
We invite anyone and everyone who has an interest in a secure future to meet in St Thomas’ Square in Newport at midday on 6th November.

At that time groups all over the country and indeed the world will be gathering to plead with the politicians in Glasgow to redouble their efforts and to have the courage to take the necessary steps to protect the future of humanity.

Bring your creativity
We invite all attendees to actively participate and bring their creativity.

After the meet up in the Square there will be a further gathering at Newport’s Unitarian Church Hall – from 13.30 onwards – for refreshments and discussions on climate, nature, politics and our collective future will take place with various local groups participating.

UK has led the world on climate
The fact that COP26 is being held on British soil gives us a special responsibility to people the world over.

Despite inconsistencies, the UK has led the world on climate with the 2008 climate change bill, a landmark piece of legislation that was a template for many other countries.

Time for action is now
Now is the time to up the ante again and lead the world again in driving down dangerous emissions.

It’s clear the effects of climate change are upon us and accelerating. We are witnessing worldwide increases in flooding, drought and wildfires.

Let’s not forget towns in Canada that reached 49°C before burning to the ground entirely, and the historic flooding in Germany and Belgium that killed hundreds and cost billions.

Ever-worsening climate catastrophes
The ramifications for future generations will be increased global insecurity as politics and society struggles to deal with ever-worsening climate catastrophes.
