School children and community groups in the Oakfield area of Ryde have been working with The New Carnival Company to create a range of colourful lanterns for their neighbourhood parade on Friday 13th December at 6.00pm.
The theme for the parade is Flora and Fauna and has inspired local people to make what are arguably some of the most beautiful lanterns ever seen on the Island.
New techniques have inspired residents
The NCC’s Outreach Worker, Gina Dyer said:
“We have been working with soaked willow and stripped cane to great effect. The materials have allowed us to make wonderful detail on a range of seasonal lanterns including poinsettia flowers, mistletoe and holly.
“The new techniques we have introduced this year have really inspired Oakfield residents to fantastic levels of creativity – we are really proud of them all.”
Frankie Goldspink, Participation and Learning Manger added:
“Lantern making for local neighbourhood based parades is a great way of involving people of all ages and abilities in high quality arts activity. It’s going to be a really exciting and colourful evening.”
Groups from Oakfield Primary School, Oakfield Football Club, The Foyer, Route 66, St John’s Messy Church, Viva Integrated Carnival Club, Creative Volunteers and RAW Samba will be taking part in the parade.
The parade
The Lantern Parade will leave Oakfield Football Club at 6pm led by a giant puppet Santa Claus for a tour of the estate, stopping at the Christmas tree at School Street for some community carol singing.
Mulled wine, mince pies and gifts from Santa for participating young people will add to the festive spirit.
