Three students, who have already achieved gold Duke of Edinburgh awards, will present the Earl Mountbatten Hospice with a large cheque following a year of fundraising.
Carla Fisher, 23, Alice Burton, 22, and Edward Gentry, 23, raised £3,000 as part of the volunteering section of their gold awards.
Over the last year, the trio have each taken part in one of a variety of activities to raise the cash. These have included a sponsored swim, hosting fundraising meals, selling pancakes and jewellery and rowing the distance of the Solent on a rowing machine onboard a ferry.
Stepping further afield
One of the girls, Carla, took part in a charity trek across the Great Wall of China.
The money will be presented to the Hospice at 1900 on Thursday 16 December at Newport Youth Club.
What’s the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is dedicated to the personal development of young people from all backgrounds.
It is open to people aged 14 – 25 and over 275,000 young people, including 30,000 from disadvantaged backgrounds, undertake DofE programmes to achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards every year.
