East Cowes Town Council tackles Post Office closure to maintain community services

East Cowes Town Council is actively working to resolve the sudden closure of the town’s Post Office in Bestway Retail, a move that has left many residents concerned.

The Town Council has expressed interest in taking over the running of a local Post Office to ensure that vital services remain accessible to the community.

Community impact at the forefront
Councillor Karl Love has been vocal about the importance of maintaining Post Office services in East Cowes. He emphasises that many residents rely heavily on these services, particularly those who prefer or require in-person transactions.

Councillor Love stated,

“I hope we will be able to resolve this in a positive way, as many town residents rely upon access to Post Office services and their savings by attending a Post Office in person.”

He highlighted the central role that the Post Office plays in the town, noting that it is more than just a service; it is a vital part of the community. According to Councillor Love, the presence of a Post Office supports other local businesses and provides a sense of purpose and routine for many residents, particularly those who face challenges with online services or have disabilities.

Post Office responds to closure
The closure of the Post Office in East Cowes was unexpected for many. Initially, there was hope that the service would continue until the end of January, as per communication with Bestway, the company managing the branch.

However, the Post Office has since confirmed that Bestway will not be reopening the branch. A Post Office spokesperson said,

“We were originally advised by Bestway that the PO would remain open until the end of January.

“Unfortunately, we have now been advised that they will not be re-opening the PO at East Cowes.”

Next steps for the community
The Town Council’s efforts to find a solution reflect the broader community’s concerns about losing a key service. The focus now shifts to exploring the feasibility of the Town Council or another local body stepping in to operate the Post Office.

Residents who wish to stay informed about developments or contribute to the discussion can find more information on the Consultation Hub.

Those wishing to express an interest in running the Post Office should visit the PO website.

The situation remains fluid, but the Town Council’s proactive approach offers a glimmer of hope for the future of Post Office services in East Cowes.
