Press Release from the Isle of Wight Council. Ed
Isle of Wight Council is to carry out essential repairs to ensure the stability of a bridge in Binstead that serves as a main road to and from Ryde.
Trees roots adjacent to the stretch of road that runs past the former Volvo garage and up to Rufflers Way on Binstead Road are undermining the bank which supports the road.
The works will involve the removal of over a dozen trees to enable repairs to the bank and also replace the bridge’s parapets. Once the work has been completed, new trees will be planted.
It is anticipated the works will take up to 15 weeks to complete and they are scheduled to begin in mid-September, with an exact date to be published nearer the time. Traffic management will be required at times during the works.
IW Council Cabinet member for Environment and Transport Edward Giles said “Fortunately our engineers identified these repairs before any failure of the road had happened.
“Whilst road works can be inconvenient at anytime of year we have been able to programme these repair works outside of the peak holiday season.
“These works are unavoidable and if not dealt with could result in the road collapsing which would cost significantly more to put right and we would have lost the use of this key route for some time”
