Discover Creative Life of Newport Quay

No Man is an Island and Quay Arts are collaborating again this year for their 3rd Open Weekend.

This year they are joined by the Riverside Centre to celebrate the creative life of Newport Quay with free workshops on Friday 23rd July and Saturday 24th and closing with a live music event on Sunday evening, 25th July.

No Man is an Island will also be at Havenstreet Steam Railway on Saturday evening, for the Island branch of the National Autistic Society’s second annual ‘Train Walk’.

The Open Weekend event will start with a silk marbling workshop at the Riverside Centre on Friday morning between 10:30am and 1pm.

Bristol artist Sarah Falber has joined the No Man is an Island project before and her marbling workshops are always a popular attraction.

Discover Creative Life of Newport QuayNo Man is an Island Project Manager Melanie Swan said “I’m delighted that Sarah’s able to join us again this year and to launch Open Weekend at the Riverside Centre. Marbling is a simple but magical process which is great fun and everyone can achieve a beautiful result.” People will be given a piece of silk to marble with coloured inks and can take their own unique creation home with them.

Cityscapes and Villagescapes
On Saturday, artist Tim Johnson will be at the Jubilee Stores from 10am-3pm inviting families to join the Quay Arts ‘Cityscapes and Villagescapes‘ project with a free drop-in workshop.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this will be the last of a series of community workshops. “I’ve seen some of the wonderful work Tim’s been doing for this project, working with children and young people. We’re really looking forward to joining him on Saturday”, said Melanie.

“It will be great to welcome people of all ages to join him in building the exhibition to be shown at Quay Arts”.

The Cityscapes and Villagescapes exhibition will be shown in the Learning Curve Gallery from Saturday 31st July to Saturday 14th August.

Steam Railway
Sarah Falber and Melanie Swan will be at Havenstreet Steam Railway on Saturday evening, from 6:15-8pm offering free children’s activities in the marquee, including silk marbling.

“I love coming to the Island and I’ve met so many wonderful people in the No Man is an Island workshops” said Sarah “I’m really looking forward to meeting the children and their families again this year”.

Live music at Quay Arts
Quay Arts are hosting a live music event on Sunday and will be giving an emerging band the opportunity to support ‘The Gramophone Party’ in a live music event in the Minghella Theatre. “We’re thrilled that The Gramophone Party are able to join us for another great Newport Quay event with the Island community” said Melanie “and it’s a special privilege to be able to close our Open Weekend with such a wonderful community celebration”.

Doors open at 7:30pm and the bands will play in the Minghella Theatre from 8-10pm and. During the evening, No Man is an Island will be inviting people to knit a stitch on their giant Knitting Nancy and to ‘Make a Face’ for their seed bed!
