Exploring The Island’s Changing Climate To Prepare For Our Future

More exciting news from Natural Enterprise, in their own words. Ed

Weathering change logoToday saw the launch of an exciting project, Weathering the Change, a programme of events running this spring dedicated to the exploration of the Island’s diverse weather, from our lazy summers, storm fuelled waves and snow covered hills.

The project is being delivered by Natural Enterprise as part of their key priority of adapting to climate change. Part of their work will be to investigate how the Island and our lives will be shaped by our future climate and asking you to help show how we are currently being affected.

As part of the project and to raise awareness of our changing climate to all ages, two competitions are being run; photography and poetry.

Photography
The photography competition is divided in to two age groups (under 16s and 17 and over) with great prizes including a day spent learning with an Isle of Wight County Press photographer and a Year’s Smug Mug Pro account. Not only that but entrant’s photos will be available to view on the dedicated website.

Poetry
The Poetry competition is also divided in to two age groups (13 years and under and 14 to 18 years inclusive). The winners from each category will receive a £30 book voucher and the two runners up a £15 book voucher.

A selection of the poems and photographs will also be included in the Festival in the Minster, St Thomas’ square at the end of April and later in the Hive at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Keen to show diversity of Island’s climate
Sam Buck, Climate Change Connoisseur at Natural Enterprise said “We want to show how diverse the Island’s weather and climate is and what better way than through pictures and words. We want to see shots of the Island’s weather and the impact it’s made and we’d love to hear how your experiences of our weather too.”

The deadline for entry to both competitions is 23 March 2011 with winners announced on 30 March.

“Climate change can’t be ignored”
Brian Friend, Chairman of Natural Enterprise said “Climate change is here; we’ve seen the extreme weather conditions this past winter and the negative effects it has had on our businesses and the Island’s economy. It’s so important, it shouldn’t be ignored and we must look at ways to mitigate the impact it has on our daily lives. We need to create awareness to young and old and across all our business sectors which we hope will be addressed by our Weathering the Change project”

As part of the Weathering the Change project Natural Enterprise will be running a series of events including workshops for businesses and communities and seminars for farmers early culminating in a Festival in April, ensuring we will be able to weather the changes facing our island.
