A recent court case has revealed that the generosity of a car dealer in supporting the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (UPDATE: Thanks to research done by Sherie Williams Ellen of IW Air Ambulance, we’ve found out that The Telegraph got this wrong, he was raising funds for the …) Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance at a charity event back-fired.
Chris Carey, of Eastleigh Hampshire, kindly offered to raise money for the Air Ambulance by letting people have a drive in his Ferrari 360 Spider in exchange for a £15 donation to the charity.
All was going well until a friend, David Eldridge, took the wheel and crashed it into a tree, causing the car to burst into flames, wrecking the £50,000 car. Fortunately no-one was injured.
What led Chris Carey to court was his subsequent insurance claim, which stated that he was driving the car, not the uninsured Eldridge.
This is Hampshire is reporting that Carey was ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work after admitting the fraud. [The Telegraph]
