Figures for unemployed claimants came out this morning which show that 2,720 people on the Isle of Wight were claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in August 2013.
Unemployment Benefit figures released by the Office for National Statistics show a drop of 75 since July 2013, which reported 2,795 JSA claimants, and a drop of 239 from August 2012 (2,959).
That means 4.4% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming JSA – 2.3% more than the rest of the South East (2.1%), and 1.3% more than the whole of the UK (3.3%).
Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is payable to people under pensionable age who are available for, and actively seeking, work of at least 40 hours a week.
