Help us record our beach wildlife on the Isle of Wight!
What is Shoresearch?
Shoresearch is a recording and surveying project run by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust in which volunteers identify and record the habitats and wildlife that exist along our coastline.
Anyone can get involved – you’ll gain marine biological knowledge and a better understanding of the species and habitats found on our shore, as well as contributing to records which help build up a picture of our coasts.
Discover fascinating creation in Ryde
Ryde has several interesting habitats to explore with fascinating creatures to discover. For example, seagrass beds are nationally rare but very important as they provide a habitat for baby fish and lots of other invertebrates. The Isle of Wight supports some large meadows, one of which grows at Ryde and becomes exposed at low tide so we can go and survey it.
Our Shoresearch team recorded 60 species of animals, plants and seaweeds at Ryde last year, but you could help us record even more this year! The data we collect at Ryde is especially important as it is within a recommended Marine Conservation Zone, so information collected during our surveys can be used to help protect the area and wildlife that depends on it.
How can I get involved?
All our Shoresearch surveys are free of charge to attend. No prior knowledge is required and we can teach you everything you need to know whilst on the beach, you just need to book on and come equipped with a pair of wellies!
