As part of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council’s Year of the Child, local historian Roger Fruen will be giving a talk about ‘The Little Sweep’ Valentine Gray’s life and tragic death – as we mark 200 years since his death.
Roger will tell us more about Valentine’s life, how he was treated by his ’employer’, his death, where it took place, the trial and the consequences of what happened after.
Roger kindly spoke at the wreath laying on the 31st January, he is extremely knowledgeable and all those of you who have heard him speak before will know just how gripping his talks are!
Tickets are £5 each and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Isle of Wight Youth Trust.
The Youth Trust
The Youth Trust is the Island’s largest independent provider of youth mental health services dedicated to listening to, and supporting, the Island’s children and young people. The charity has been supporting young people on the Isle of Wight for over 35 years, through the provision of a confidential and professional counselling and wellbeing service.
Covid has had a significant impact on young people’s mental health, nearly a third of 11–25-year-olds on the Island do not feel positive about their future, almost half have felt terribly alone and isolated. In 2021, the demand for the Youth Trust’s services was unprecedented, with an average of 115 individuals per month contacting them for support. The proceed from these ticket sales will provide vital funds to support their work.
Where and when
The talk about the life and death of ‘The Little Sweep’ will take place on Sat 19th March, between 6-7pm at Lord Louis Library in Newport.
