Congratulations to New Inn in Shalfleet and Taverners in Godshill who are the only Isle of Wight pubs to feature in the South East section of the latest Michelin Eating Out In Pubs Guide.
New Inn
Michelin loved the character of New Inn, which they point out is not so new, given there’s been an Inn on the site since 1743.
They loved the ‘proper pub dishes’ such as beef and ale pie or steak and chips, but as noted the locally-landed fish and seafood features and noted that some customers are known to have travelled over from the mainland just to east there.
Taverners
The entry for Taverners picks up on the local focus for the pub, where you can swap your home-grown produce for a pint or two. They also like the in-pub deli, as well as the produce grown onsite alongside free-range chickens.
The hand-raised pork pie and “my nan’s lemon meringue pie” are picked out as specialties – although we’d recommend you avoid giving feedback if you try the dessert.
An innocent observation made to the waitress about the lemon meringue pie, resulted in crashing dishes from the kitchen, followed by a petulant response from the chef when we dined there five years ago.
